Cooling and refrigerants: Absorption chiller design guide

MILWAUKEE, 28 July 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Johnson Controls (NYSE: JCI), a global leader in thermal management, mission-critical building systems, energy efficiency and decarbonisation, today launched its Absorption Chiller Design Guide.

The blueprint helps data centre operators convert the 57% of energy typically lost as waste heat from on-site power generation into useful cooling, reducing cooling-related electricity demand and allocating more power to AI workloads.

In a 1 GW AI factory, this efficiency gain could support up to 97 MW of additional AI computing capacity without increasing on-site power generation, creating the potential for up to US$18 billion in additional revenue over the facility's lifetime, based on a typical US AI factory model.

“One of the biggest untapped opportunities in data centres is the heat they produce,” said Austin Domenici, President of Global Data Center Solutions at Johnson Controls.

“Johnson Controls helps turn recovered heat into useful work through combined heat and power and absorption cooling solutions, enabling AI factories to scale more efficiently while reducing pressure on the grid and benefiting local communities.”
