SiteA distributed network of base stations belonging to a national mobile network operator.
Scale2 870 base stations across three regions of Ukraine.
HVAC systemTwo air conditioning systems in an N+1 arrangement, free cooling and a local controller at each site.
Scope of responsibilityEstablishing the service operation, planned maintenance, emergency repairs, repairs, logistics, procedures and SLA monitoring.

The brief

Organise reliable servicing for 2 870 base stations across three regions of Ukraine. At each site, both cooling and full standby system readiness had to be maintained.

The client needed more than isolated emergency responses: a managed service infrastructure with clear procedures, team routing, equipment stocks, system condition monitoring and predictable restoration of operation.

System configuration

Each station had two air conditioning systems in an N+1 arrangement, a free cooling system and a local controller. This configuration allowed duty rotation, reduced compressor running hours and maintained standby capacity in the event of a fault or peak load.

N+1

One air conditioner operates while the second starts automatically in the event of a fault or insufficient capacity.

Duty rotation

The controller alternates equipment operation and balances running hours.

Free cooling

When the outdoor temperature is suitable, the room is cooled using outdoor air.

Fault monitoring

The controller monitors temperature, system operation and loss of redundancy.

Solutions

A regional service model was established, covering emergency teams, planned maintenance procedures, spare parts logistics, service request escalation and monitoring of work completion.

Particular emphasis was placed on restoring redundancy. If a system restores cooling after a fault but loses N+1 redundancy, the site is technically operational but no longer has the required reliability.

Result

A managed service operation was created for 2 870 geographically distributed sites. It provided planned maintenance, emergency response and restoration of the full N+1 configuration, rather than merely a temporary return of cooling.

The value of the solution lay not in individual items of equipment but in operational discipline: the service operation had to be predictable, documented and consistently effective across a large number of sites.

The reliability of distributed infrastructure depends not on a single robust node but on consistent service quality across hundreds or thousands of small sites.
