VRF: keeping cool by changing refrigerants

Refrigeration and refrigerants: VRF: keeping cool by changing refrigerants

While the basic refrigeration cycle remains unchanged, manufacturers continue to develop innovative products, installers find new ways to improve installation speed and quality, and software evolves to support every stage of construction.

As the world strives for a more sustainable future, recent regulations are phasing out certain refrigerants. This is not the first time the industry has faced a refrigerant transition, but it has led some to question the future of variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems.

Despite these concerns, VRF systems will continue to offer unrivalled benefits in efficiency, flexibility and sustainability, and maintain a strong presence in our industry. VRF systems are excellent. With inverter-driven compressors, they achieve efficiencies far beyond those of conventional HVAC systems.

VRF can provide simultaneous heating and cooling, much like a VAV system, but with built-in heat recovery that requires no dedicated equipment or control sequences. Rather than wasting heat, VRF can reuse it in areas where it is needed.

VRF is also an excellent option for retrofitting older buildings, using refrigerant pipework instead of bulky ductwork. Finally, in a world increasingly focused on decarbonisation, VRF systems are an excellent all-electric solution, offering impressive heating capacity even in cold climates.
