DAVIDSON, North Carolina, 30 June 2025 — Trane®, a company of global climate innovator Trane Technologies (NYSE: TT), has successfully implemented the first dynamic closed-loop (DCL) geothermal system in the United States at North Shore School District 112, located in Chicago’s northern suburbs.
This pioneering project marks a significant milestone in the pursuit of sustainable and efficient energy solutions for educational institutions, setting a new standard for energy efficiency in K-12 schools.
Faced with ageing infrastructure and guided by a commitment to environmental stewardship, North Shore School District 112 sought innovative solutions that would not only meet immediate needs but also serve future generations of pupils.
With strong community support and a successful public referendum, the district partnered with Trane to explore the potential of geothermal energy. ‘The drive for green energy and savings for taxpayers was at the heart of our project,’ said Dr Michael Lubelfeld, Superintendent of North Shore School District 112.
‘Trane’s implementation of DCL technology aligns perfectly with our strategic agenda and core values of supporting both education and the environment.’ Unlike traditional geothermal systems, DCL technology uses the superior heat transfer properties of flowing water, requiring significantly less physical space.
